Chocolate and Orange Cake

We’ve kept this basic chocolate and orange cake recipe simple (though no less delicious), but if you want to glam it up a bit, why not try making a marble cake? Instead of combining all the ingredients, make up the cake mix without the cocoa and orange elements then split the mix into two bowls. Add the cocoa and 2 tablespoons of milk to one and the orange juice and zest to the other. Dollop tablespoons of both in the base of your tin then gently drag a skewer through them to create marble effect.

  • Ingredients

    225g Unsalted Butter
    225g Caster Sugar
    4 Eggs
    225g Self-Raising Flour Sieved
    2tbsp Cocoa Powder
Zest of 1 Orange and 2tbsp of Orange Juice from the Same Orange
    1tbsp Icing Sugar for Dusting

How to Cook

1. Heat your oven to 180C/Gas Mark 4. Grease and line a Springform cake tin or loaf tin.

2. Beat the butter and sugar until light a fluffy in a processor or using a wooden spoon.

3. Add each egg one by one with a tablespoon of the flour and combine. Add the orange zest then stir in the remaining flour and cocoa powder by hand.

4. Stir through the orange juice last of all then pour into the cake tin. Bake for 40-50 minutes or until a skewer comes out of the cake clean.

5. Dust the surface with the icing sugar and serve with double cream, naturally.

Spruce it Up

Make it even more packed full of orange flavour by adding a small handful of candied orange either to the top of your cake with a little icing sugar and water to glaze it, or within the actual cake mixture.
